Vassell Comes Back To Haunt Old Club

A Darius Vassell double and 1 from veteran striker Andy Cole was enough to see of a weak Aston Villa side this Halloween evening. Two first half strikes meant Stuart Pearce's side went into the half time break 2 goals to the good in front of a home crowd. Vassell struck early on after a calamitous mix-up between goalkeeper Samuel and goalkeeper Stuart Taylor who was called into the Villa squad late after Sorensen injured his ankle during the warm-up. Vassells first was ridiculous is second superb. Vassell strode calmly forward and without breaking slide converted Coles flick on to make it two. Coming out to play another 45 minutes Man City would have expected the 3 points were there's, but that's not the way Villa saw it. A goal from Liam Ridgewell on 64 minutes meant the Blues still had a job to do. The goal again came about thanks to a goalkeeping error, this time for David James.
The game was however sealed on 82 minutes when Andy Cole's shot deflected off of Mark Delaney and into the back of the net, restoring City's 2 goal advantage. Stuart Pearce's new role as Man City manager as brought a breath of fresh air to the City Of Manchester stadium, Man City are now in 4th place and are showng the sort of form that gets teams into Europe. Unfortunately for David O'leary it is the opposite for his club. Things are going from bad to worse, Villa now just 2 points above the drop zone in 16th place, and with Patrick Berger limping off with 15 minutes left to play things may get worse before they improve.

When running onto the pitch after the final whistle at the weekend Aston Villa manager David O'Leary had no idea how much trouble he would cause. Many have called his behaviour after the game irresponisble especially as it was against local rivals Birmingham. Today the FA have indeed charged him for his post match actions. But strangely enough not because he ran across the pitch but for using abusive or insulting words to a match official. Apparantly on his way to wave to Doug Ellis he passed referee Graham Poll and let him know that he thought he had a "very poor game indeed" or something to that affect.
