Vassell Comes Back To Haunt Old Club

A Darius Vassell double and 1 from veteran striker Andy Cole was enough to see of a weak Aston Villa side this Halloween evening. Two first half strikes meant Stuart Pearce's side went into the half time break 2 goals to the good in front of a home crowd. Vassell struck early on after a calamitous mix-up between goalkeeper Samuel and goalkeeper Stuart Taylor who was called into the Villa squad late after Sorensen injured his ankle during the warm-up. Vassells first was ridiculous is second superb. Vassell strode calmly forward and without breaking slide converted Coles flick on to make it two. Coming out to play another 45 minutes Man City would have expected the 3 points were there's, but that's not the way Villa saw it. A goal from Liam Ridgewell on 64 minutes meant the Blues still had a job to do. The goal again came about thanks to a goalkeeping error, this time for David James.

The game was however sealed on 82 minutes when Andy Cole's shot deflected off of Mark Delaney and into the back of the net, restoring City's 2 goal advantage. Stuart Pearce's new role as Man City manager as brought a breath of fresh air to the City Of Manchester stadium, Man City are now in 4th place and are showng the sort of form that gets teams into Europe. Unfortunately for David O'leary it is the opposite for his club. Things are going from bad to worse, Villa now just 2 points above the drop zone in 16th place, and with Patrick Berger limping off with 15 minutes left to play things may get worse before they improve.

Romanov's Cause Hearts Exodus.

Just under two weeks ago Hearts manager George Burley walked out on the Scottish club. Today saw even more upheavel at Tynecastle, chief executive Phil Anderton and Chairman George Foulkes have both dramatically walked out on the club. Guess why, yep that's right, Vladamir Romanov decided he didn't want Phil Anderton as a chief exective anymore and so he was sacked, Foulkes then resigned in support of Anderton. So who is going to be filling the vacant chairman position? Actally it has already been filled by Roman Romonov son of majority shareholder Vladamir.

Upon his departure Foulkes questioned the reasons behind Romonov increasing his shareholding in the club. "Mr Romanov has already done a huge amount for the club as the principal shareholder. How much more can he do as the owner?". At the weekend Hearts lost top spot after being beaten by Hibernian. With so much disturbance at Tyncastle one can't help but wonder whether it will affect their on pitch performance. Top spot is gone and with Celtic topping the league it will be hard to get back.

Owen Gives Magpies Boost

A Michael Owen double gave Newcastle a much needed 3-0 victory against Bryan Robsons West Brom side this afternoon. Owen looked form, his first goal a superb finish from he ex-Liverpool man and his second demonstrated just how good his reactions are. Substitute Alan Shearer added a third to seal a well deserved victory. 26,216 saw Graeme Souness side run out winners thanks to good performances from Owen, Emre and Given who was sturdy in goal, although his afternoon was a quiet one.

West broom's Robert Earnshaw said after the match that his side were unlucky, and to be fair they were, they had chances but they just weren't taken. Take a look at their strikers. Kanu - old and a bit past his sell by date, Earnshaw- simply too inconsistent, Ellington- Not given a chance to prove himself, Horsefield- A good championship player but can't cut it at the top level. In my opinion West Brom have too many mediocre strikers, they need someone who can bang in 20 goals a season or they are in real trouble. Perhaps that man will be Nathan Ellington, time will tell.

Arsenal Chasing Forlan?

Manchester United 98 games, 17 goals. Villareal 47 games, 26 goals. It would appear that Diego Forlan is much more suited to playing in La Liga, when in Manchester he could not adapt to the speed of the English game. But, apparently Arsenal have failed to notice this as Forlan himself has stated that the Gunners have shown interest in bringing him to London. Forlan currently plays for Villareal in La Liga after leaving Man Utd 2 years ago for an undisclosed fee. He has faired well and was part of the side that knocked Everton out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage.

The alleged interest from Arsenal Forlan was announced by the player himself, he told the News Of the World "There is interest and Arsenal have been to watch me,". So is Arsene Wenger chasing the Uruguayan, who knows as of yet he has made no comment. Forlan said that he would love to play in the Premiership again but I just wonder whether he would be able to have the same impact as he has had in Spain.

Chelsea Are Champions, United Beaten

It is a sad day for English football, as of today Roman Abramovich has proved once and for all that any rich man can change the face of English football and wipe out all of his competition, winning the title for 2 years running. Chelsea ran out 4-2 winners today despite Blackburn and Craig Bellamy's effort. 2 goals from Frank Lampard triggering his manager Mourinho to hail him the best player in the world. 13 points clear of Man Utd = Premiership race over.

Chelsea find themselves in this situation thanks to a diabolical display by Man Utd at the Riverside. United showed nothing going forward and the defence was as leaky as a battered sieve. The final result was 4-1 to Middlesbrough who should be congratulated for a brilliant performance. A speculative Mendieta strike giving the Teesiders the lead inside 2 minutes. From their United didn't look back. Ferdinand awful, Mendieta man of the match, a class act throughout.

The North London derby has also put Arsenal out of the title race. Ledley king gave Spurs the lead but it was cancelled out in the second half by Robert Pires who scored onhis birthday. Jens Lehman was hit by a conker. I'll be blunt about it. Other results see Sunderland put back at the bottom of the Premiership after a resounding 4-1 defeat at home to Pompey. Everton got a rare three points, it was more like 6 as they beat Birmingham at the bottom. Wigans superb run continued they are now 2nd an inury time winner from Chimbonda robbed Fulham of a point. Charton must hate playing at home, they were beaten at the Valley again this time 1-0 to Bolton. Finally Rafa Benitez's men mangaed a rare win, they ran out 2-0 winners against West Ham. The Spanish trio of Garcia, Alsonso and Morientes were superb.

My apologies for a poor post but I have been left annoyed today by Uniteds inability to keep ut with Chelsea and Chelsea themselves. Let's hope Sundays action cheers me up a bit.

All Square At The Break

There are two early kick offs in the Premiership today. Wigan vs Fulham at the JJb is currently even, the score 0-0 at the break. Both sides have had their chances. Henri Camara showing good pace and strength down the wing to cross for Ryan Taylor, Damien Francis just a foot away ferom converting his header. Fulham have had two penalty shouts. The 1st an appeal for handball against Wigan defender Baines, in my opinion more ball to hand than intentional. The second saw Moritz Voltz booked for diving, but from whefre I was sitting (on my sofa) he appeared to have been tripped.

The London derby kicked off 15 minutes later and so the break has not yet been reached. the score so far though is Spurs 1 - 0 Arsenal. Tottenham skipper Ledley King converting a Michael carrick free kick with his head. Tottenham have had the better of the 1st half with 7 shots on goal compared to The Gunners 2. Arsenal clearly missing Henry, Pires has been dropped, perhaps that penalty incident last week cost him his place. Still another 45 minutes to play in these games.

Doncaster Get Home Tie

Doncaster Rovers hae made it to the 4th round of the Carling cup, the daw for this round was held earlier today and out of the 8 ties remaining 3 will be all Premiership encounters. With the holders, Chelsea, knocked out mid week any of the Premiership clubs will fancy themselves. Manchester United and Arsenal are my faourites to meet in the final but Doncaster may have an outside chance. They face Villa in the 5th round, David O'leary's side are very unpredictable so it is a game that 'The Rovers' will have a chance of winning. Here is the draw in full. Premiership clubs in bold.

Bolton v Leicester
Manchester United v West Brom
Doncaster v Aston Villa
Arsenal v Reading
Wigan v Newcastle
Charlton v Blackburn
Middlesbrough v Crystal Palace
Millwall v Birmingham

Best Clinging On

Old Trafford legend George best is seriously ill in hospital. He was admited into intensive care on Tuesday after suffering from flu like symptoms but his condition deteriorated after internal bleeding. Best, a former alcoholic, has improved overnight but is still in a serious condition. He is on a ventilator and unconscious. Today Sir Alex Ferguson sent his best wishes to the former Manchester United players bedside. Best who had a liver transplant in 2002 has been in and out of hospital in recent years, mainly as a result of his excessive drinking.

Speaking earlier today Ferguson said that
"Everyone at the club is praying for him. We hope he pulls through this dip in his health,". Best has been in hospital since the start of the month but has been recently moved to intensive care. Once the best football in Britain, his flare and passion for the game obvious for all to see, a man who faced so many hurdles in his footballing career, he fought for titles with the Manchester club. But now Best faces his toughest challenge yet, holding onto his life.

Ribiero Speaks Out

Welsh Under 17 International Christian Ribiero has given an exclusive interview to Football To You about all things youth football. Have a read, get an insight.

FTY : So Chris who do you currently play for and at for what age group?

Chris: I play for Bristol city and skipper the 16s and occasionally play for the 18s. For Wales I play at U17 level.

FTY:Do you play every week and how far do you travel for games?

Chris: We play every saturday and travel as far as Norwich. We dont play the northern teams because of the distance but we play london, midland and some southern teams.

FTY:Do you find that making commitments like this affects your ability to play with mates e.t.c,

Chris: Yeh, I mean sometimes my mates will be doing stuff on a weekend or going to parties on a Friday nigh and I can't do that because I have a match on the Saturday.

FTY: So would you rather be doing these things?

Chris: No absolutely not, it's a sacrifice I am willing to make.

FTY: Do you find there is a lot of pressure on someone of your ability to do well?

Chris: Yes there is plenty of pressure, but I thrive on pressure. To handle pressure is a key part of any sport so I have to learn to handle that in my own way.

FTY: Do you fell support structures are in place for you from your parents, trainers e.t.c?

Chris: Yes the support I receive is fantastic. Without all the help I am currently getting I would never of been able to have so much success.

FTY: Now some questions from Football To You readers. How does it feel to be the youngest player in the under 17 welsh team?

Chris: Its a great honour to represent my country but the age differences doesn't matter at all. I still work as hard as the older lads and maybe give them a few pointers instead of always getting them myself.

FTY: How does he feel about being welsh, I mean it must be completely demoralizing.

Chris: Well you don't know I have seen some really talented players in the Welsh set up, they mite be a power to be reckoned with in the next few years.

FTY: If you could play in any position where would you wish to play? And honestly do you think you can make it as a pro, and what level of football do you think you will be playing and when?

Chris: I really enjoy playing right back, it allows me to attack and defend. Its hard to comment on the future because anything could happen but I am working very hard to become the best player I can be and hopefully that's good enough.

FTY: Finallt Chris when do you hope to break into Bristol citys first team?

Chris: I'd love to play for bristol city as soon as possible, but they have a good bunch of players so its going to be incredibley difficult to break in.

FTY: Cheers chris just like to say good luck for the future from everyone at Football To You

Chris: Ok thanks Cya.

So remember the name Christian Ribiero, maybe one day his Welsh side will beat England to the World Cup Finals, but not just yet.

Pardew Agrees New Hammers Deal

What a difference a year can make. Last year West Ham were struggling in The Championship, every week the fans would call for Pardew to leave, but now they find themselves sitting 9th in The Premiership. What a job Pardew has done, his reward it would appear is a new contract to keep him at Upton Park until 2010. His contract reportedly includes bonus' for keeping the London club in the Premiership and also for good cup runs, the Premiership bonus is one I believe Pardew will be receiving come may.

Pardew joined West Ham under a cloud of controversy in October 2003 after resigning from his former club Reading. Despite a rocky start to his stay he seems to have now proved the West Ham board right, he was and still is the right man for the job.

Liverpool's Run Of Misery Continues

Rafa Benitez said his men must improve, but tonight they didn't. Another disgraceful loss away at Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup. The carling cup has a reputation for being a tournament in which team field weakened sides, but Liverpool chose not to go down that road, with the likes of Gerrard, Morientes, Crouch, Hamann and Kewell a win was expected. But a 66th minute Marco Reich goal put that idea to bed. Gerrard's 50th Liverpool goal was little conciliation for the European champions who have failed at the first hurdle of this years competition. Questions are tonight being asked about the future of Liverpool football club and in particular manager Benitez. Should he go, I think it's time for new blood at Anfield.

tonight's other cup ties all went the way of the favoured club, although Wigan had a scare at home to the 'Glory Hornet Boys' Watford, the score 0-0 at full time. 3-0 the final score after an additional 30 minutes. Fulham and West Broms game also saw added time with ex-Fulham midfielder Junichi Inamoto putting his former club out of the competition. Arsenal saw off Sunderland 3-0 in front of a packed house at the stadium of light. 47,336 the attendance, another oddity for the Carling cup which often draws small crowds, the showing helped by the black cats charging just £1 for kids entry.

Villa, Blackburn, Palace, Doncaster, Fulham, Millwall, Reading, Arsenal and Wigan all progress to the 4th Round.

Cameroon Shirt Row Settled

I've had enough of British football for today so I'd thought I'd bring you some news from Africa. I may make Tuesday's a regular International news days. What do you think? Anyway to the news. Can you remember Africas controversial kit at last years African nations cup. Fifa banned them from playing in it and it caused upset amongst kit manufacturers Puma. The kit itself was more like a body suit without sleeves. But today a German judge has ruled that the kit was in no breach of FIFA's kit regulations.

Fifa have refused to disclose the details of the settlement but have stated that they did it for "the good of international football".

Things Must Improve

Rafael Benitez has today admitted that things at Liverpool must improve. The European champions currently find themselves way down in 13th place after a disgraceful 2-0 defeat to Fulham at the weekend, a result that Fulham, fully deserved. Benitez has cited the attack as the problem area, his team having scored only 5 goals in 8 premiership games. The reds boss has also suggested that his side have been suffering from European hangovers. "We all know we need to change the attitude, particularly after European games,".

With strikers such as Cisse, Crouch and Morientes you would think scoring wouldn't be a problem. But it is, Cisse shows nothing but pace, although he is improving gradually as the season goes on. Crouch is tall but hes no world class player and Morientes has simply failed to deliver. Liverpool are in danger of not qualifying for next seasons European competitions unless they find the winning formula they have shown in the Champions league. Maybe like last season they will find a way of bending the rules and sneaking in through the back door.

Bobby Robson Tipped For Hearts Job

Veteran manager Bobby Robson is the new favourite to take over the Hearts job that George Burley left over the weekend. 72 year old Robson is high on the wish list according to club shief executive Phil Anderton. The ex- England boss is also said to have met with Vladamir Romonov during the summer. Romonov, the majority shareholder, is said to be keen for Robson to take over after forcing George Burley out. Hearts currently top the SPL by 3 points after another victory on Saturday and with Bobby Robson's experience it is now again a possibilty that Hearts will retain top spot unitl the end of the season. Anderton commented of Robson early today that "He impressed Vladimir with his knowledge and standing and I think he would put far younger men to shame."

George Burley who was ousted from the job in question on Saturday is now favourite to take over as Irish manager, only time to tell whether he is to be the man to take Ireland to the European Championships in 2008.

Football To You Exclusive Interview

Chelsea Hit Sticky Patch

Many expect Chelsea to win the title, some say they already have, but today they were unable to carry on their remarkable winning streak away against Everton. The Toffees took the lead in the first half through a superbly taken James Beattie penalty. The penalty was conceded by an ineffectual Shaun Wright-Phillips who by his standards had a very poor game, frequently losing possession. Everton will have been please dot go into the half time break one goal to the good. However just 3 minutes into the second half their lead was cancelled out by a trademark Frank Lampard strike. Despite much pressure from the champions Everton were able to hold on for a vital point which now puts them just 3 from safety.

This weekends other matches saw Manchester United being held by 3rd placed Tottenham. Unites goal came fromt he unlikely source of Mikael Silvestre's head early on before Jermaine Jenas dispatched a superbly struck free kick into the back of the net on 72 minutes to deny the red devils 3 points. Arsenals clash with high flyers Man City was filled with controversy. 2 penalties, the first comfortably slotted in by Robert Pires, the second like nothing I've ever seen before. Instead of blasting Arsenal to a 2 goal advantage Pires attempted to pass the penalty to Henry. Confusion reigned, neither of them knew what to do and a free kick was awarded to Man City. Perhaps a video of Ajax's Johan Cruyff and Jesper Olsen is need to show the pair how it is done. Nevertheless Arsenal's first penalty was enough and they went on to win 1-0.

On Saturday Liverpool's poor start to the season continued. They suffered an appalling 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chris Coleman's Fulham. Goals from Luis Boa Morte and Collins John were enough to give the Cottagers a deserved victory on a day where Fulham said goodbye to one of it's greats Johnny Haynes who died earlier in the week. Other results saw West Ham and Wigan keep up their impressive starts. Wigan were comfortable 2-0 winners over Villa whereas West Ham saw of a dire Middlesbrough side 2-1 thanks to a
controversial Chris Riggott own goal.

2 late goals handed Bolton the three points at home to West Brom and Charlton were victorious against a flagging Pompey side thanks to a hard struck Dennis Rommedahl effort. This years first encounter between rivals Newcastle and Sunderland was a truly entertaining match. 4 goals in 7 minutes saw the game reach 2 a piece before Emre scored a wonderful free kick worthy of winning any game. Pressure off Graeme Souness' shoulders, but not Steve Bruce, his Birmingham side slipped down to 18th after a disappointing loss to mark Hughes' Blackburn.

Burley Leaves Hearts

Hearts are currently topping the SPL, a league that has been dominated for as long as many can remember by the old firm clubs. Since taking over the outfit George Burley has performed miracles. But today it has been announced that he has parted company with the Scottish club. When I heard about this I was astounded, why would a club like Hearts sack their manager when he has taken them to such dizzy heights.

Well rumour has it that he hasn't been getting on with majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov, who is announced a bid to take private control of the club yesterday. At the moment no-one is sure as to whether Burley walked out or was sacked. An announcement will be made at 6pm tonight. Surely news that will be met with great anger by Hearts fans as it is sure to disrupt their performance on the pitch.

So where does this leave Scottish football. Just as I thought 'Oh good another challenger for the SPL, that should make it interesting,' they lose their manager and with it I believe any chance of challenging for the SPL this season. George Burley has done nothing but good for that club and its a great shame in my opinion that a Russian millionaire can come in with a 'plan to make Hearts viable championship prospect' and simply oust one of the best managers the club has had.

Another Man U Youngster Extends Deal

Kieran Ricahrdson today the latest Manchester United youngster to renew his deal. The left midfielder who has also been filling in at left back this season to cover Gabriel Heinze has signed a new 4 year deal that will keep in at the club until 2009. A successful loan spell at West Brom last season saw Ricahrdson earn himself a place in the England squad and he has since earned 4 caps, scoring on is debut in the U.S.

Richardson did have the chance to go back out on loan but he decided to try and earn himself a starting place at old trafford. It worked as he has already made 8 appearances. Upon completion of his deal Richardson sated."I am happy to commit my future to Manchester United,"

Jimmy Launches Middlesbrough Campaign

Grasshopper 0 - 1 Middlesbrough, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink the scorer. Steve Mclarens side got their Uefa Cup group D campaign off to a flying start in Switzerland this evening, a goal after 10 minutes was all it took to see off Grasshopper. Nemeth, Doriva and Viduka all has chances but it was experienced Dutchman Hasselbaink who finished a flowing Middlesbrough move to hand them 3 points in their first usefa cup group game. The Swiss team were however not an easy team to dispose of. They to had their chances but proved equally wasteful in front of goal.

Grasshopper were unlucky not to take a point from the tie having a goal harshly dissalowed for offside after 21 minutes. Middlesbrough survived many scares but eventually came out on top. With just a few minutes left Jimmy recieved his reward for winning the game for Boro... as he felt the brunt of a harsh challenge and fell to the floor.

Bolton Survive Inonu Intimidation

A poor start against Besiktas saw Bolton fall 1-0 behind to an Ailton goal after just 7 minutes, a mistake from young defender Joey O'brien allowing Ailton to aim a powerful shot high into the net and past Ian Wlaker. But Bolton didn't give in and exposing a few of Besiktas' defensive frailties were level after 29 minutes. There first meaningful attack resulted in an equalizer from the left foot of Borgetti. Bolton still not satisified set out in search of three points. There confidence restored El Hadji Diouf almot gae them the lead going into the break but his shot drifted just wide of the post.

The second half saw little improvement from the Turkish club, Ian Wlaker rarely tested. 20 minutes from time nd Bolton scored a winner... or a least they thought they had, Borgetti's finish was ruled out after Diouf strayed fractionally offside. Wanderes faired well In what looks like their toughest tie of the group stages. Allardyce will be pleased to bring his men back to England with a point under their belts.

Liverpool Confirm Gonzalez Move.

Mark Gonzalez is the next transfer to Liverpool this season. Liverpool FC today confirmed that they had reached an agreement to sign the Chilean international, from his club Albacete, even though a permanent deal at this time had previously looked unpromising.

Club Spokesman said: “Following the winger’s knee injury, we planned to take him on loan with an option for a permanent deal.No longer is a loan an issue as Gonzalez is recovering well and Liverpool FC have agreed a long term contract to bring him to Anfield."This all sounds good like good news for Liverpool who have had a disappointing start this season after the European cup triumph. Bad luck could continue, as the club will only be able to play Gonzalez once he has obtained a work permit or European Passport.

Henry.

Neil Warnock in tustle with FA

Sheffield United manager, Neil Warnock has been charged with using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official. This has however come as no shock to the sheffield United manager as he has admitted to the offence and has requested a personal hearing that is scheduled to begin in due course. The referee who was on the recieving end of Warnocks tirade is Grant Hegley, who became the subject of foul and abusive language after he turned down a late penalty appeal from the blades in their top of the table clash against Reading last week. A game which the blades went onto lose after conceding a late goal.
Putting this decision behind him is essential for Neil Warnock as he now has to concentrate on his next encounter in the Championship against Leeds, United will be without Rob Kozluk who is a key player and there is also an injury doubt hanging over David Unsworth. Even if they are 5 points clear at the top of the championship, this is no time to relax. My prediction is a 1-1 draw but neither sides will be willing to settle for a point.

Chelsea Stroll To Victory.

£50 a ticket, no wonder there were empty seats at Stamford Bridge tonight but Chelsea certainly did turn up. They ran out easy 4 - 0 winners after Drogba gave them the lead. A goalkeeping error gifted a second to centre half Carvalho just before the break. A 3rd was added on 55 minutes, as Makelele won the ball in the holding roll he has dominated for almost a decade. The ball broke to Essien who was industrious throughout, he slotted a ball to Joe Cole. Crespo made a good run off of him but he didn't pass, no matter, he confidently curled the ball around Betis keeper Doblas to put the game beyond doubt. A superb fourth was added late on by Hernan Crespo to cap a wonderful night of european football in London.

Tonights other English tie saw Liverpool win 1-0 away at Anderlecht, but only just. Cisse gave them the lead after 20 minutes with a superb volley on the swivell. Both goalkeepers performed well. Reina making three good saves and Anderlecht keeper Proto made a point blank save from Sissoko in the first half. Liverpool dominated most of the first half but failed to take their chances meaning Anderlecht were still in the game at the end of the first 45. The Belgian club improved after half time but were ultimately let down by poor finisheing. Sweedish midfielder Wilhelmsson showed flashes of brilliance in the second half and had a penalty appeal turned down, television replays showing the ball did strike Jamie carraghers hand. 12 minutes from time and Sissoko broke again but once more Proto denied the Spaniard a well deserved goal. Liverpool will be please with their 3 points tonight. 3 points which put them on 7 points alongside Chelsea in Group G.

Half Time Scores

A night of European football has started well for the tournaments English participants. Chelsea are leading Betis 2-0 at the break with Liverpool 1-0 up away at Anderlecht.

Chelsea got off to a storming start with Drogaba opening the scoring within 25 minutes. Essien strode through the centre of the park carrying the ball forward, he finds an unmarked Drogba who slots home with a strikers instinct. Carvalho taps home the second from very close range after an embarassing keeper fumble. A slightly ill tempered first have as seen Yellow cards dished out to Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelsea and from betis Rivas and Varela. Chelsea have had the overall possession Lampard and Essien carving many oppurtunities for the home side.

In Anderlecht this evening Cisse struck with a sweet right foot volley from a hamann corner to give Liverpool the lead on the 20 minute mark. It has been a fairly equal match in statistical terms as possession is 50 50, Anderlecht have not been the walk over many expected with Mpenza holding the ball up well. This is still a match that could go either way.

Success for Ray Parlour??

Middelsbroughs veteran midfielder Ray Parlour has claimed that his team are good enough
to win the UEFA cup. He stated "We have a good squad." Could be the beginning of an excellent UEFA cup race for a middle rated premiership side. With strong attacking players such as Yakubu and Viduka and experience in the midfield in the form of Boateng and Parlour, I believe success ion the competition is a possibility if they can string a few results together.

There first match is against Swiss giants Grasshopper, Playing in Switzerland should in theory give the advantage to Grasshopper but i doubt they have the class to outplay the Premiership outfit. Having only recorded one win in six attempts against english opposition in previous UEFA cup competitons a win against the north east club is highly unlikely. Kick off on Thursday is at 9 O'clock, I expect another exciting uefa cup tie but don't beleive Grasshopper have the class to take all three points. Prdiction Middlesbough 2 vs 0 Grasshopper. Why not give your own prediction for Thursdays game.

Bolton v Besiktas: A Look Ahead

On Thursday night Bolton will be up against hugely under rated Turkish side Besiktas. The giants of the Turkish game will have the primary advantage of playing at home, this means a trip the Inonu stadium for Allardyce and his men. Bolton already have three players confirmed to be unavailiable for the Uefa cup tie Nicky Hunt, Jay-Jay Okocha and Ivan Campo are all out injured. But to make matters worse Stelios Giannakopoulos and Gary Speed are also injury doubts as they picked up knocks from Boltons previous encounter with Chelsea. Sam allardyce has been forced to call on youngsters Bedi Buval, Jarostaw Fojut and Chris Howarth to compensate for the lack of midfield competition.

But there is still hope for Bolton as Besiktas are having to appoint Mehmet Eski and Ulvi Guveneroghi as temporary managers due to Riz Calimbay handing in his notice a week prior to kick off. Bolton will be looking to get their group stage campaign up and running in what promises to be avery open game.

Half Times

Tonights Champions League matches feature two English clubs, Chelsea and Liverpool are playing in the same group against Real Betis and Anderlecht respectivly. After a draw against each other few weeks back both clubs will be looking for a win tonight, this would put both clubs on 7 points and more or less confirm there safe passage to the knock out stages.

After suggestions from readers I have decided again to do half time and full time match reports so if you want to catch up with whats going on check back later this evening.

Kerr's Contract Not Renewed.

Well he's gone. Just over a week after the irish failed to qualify for the Wolrd Cup and their manager has collected his P45. On his departure Kerr blasted the Irish FA's decision as 'short sighted' The dubliner is said to be incredibly dissapointed at the loss of his job and now considering his future which he says is definately in the game of football.

So with Ireland failing to reach the World Cup in 2006 who will become the next manager of the Irish national team. My money's on Martin O'Neill but where is yours. Let us know. Other possible candidates could be David O'leary, John Aldridge and maybe even Sir ALex Ferguson, although his odds have been raised since denying reports he had met the Irish FA!

Lille Play For Draw

Lille came to Old Trafford tonight with only one aim - keep a clean sheet and leave with a point. Unfortunately for the Manchester club they achieved just that. The first half saw United create few oppurtunities and the second half fewer. One of the most boring matches in European history also saw Paul Scholes sent off for a second yellow after upending Lille midfielder Makoun. From then on United couldn't keep possession and a young midfield lacked anay ideas going forwards. Ji-Sung Park came on 10 minutes from time and ran well, took players on and looked confident. As a Manchester United fan I have to ask why he didn't start. An Ultimately dissapointing night for United who now have 5 points from their first 3 Champions League games.

Unlike United Arsenal were successful in their search for three points. Thierry Henry coming off of the bench just 6 minutes in scored two goals, his first a super strike from outside the box and his second after a beautiful through ball from Robert Pires skipper 30 yards into his feet. Henry cool as ever slotted past Prague keeper Blazek. Arsenal's qualification is now more or less confirmed as they are 6 points clear of 3rd placed FC Thun. Thierry Henry also reached a personal milestone passing Ian Wright to become Arsenals all time top scorer.

Henry Is Back : Champions League Latest

Its half time in tonights Champions League ties and by popular demand here are some match reports. Thierry Henry wasn't supposed to be fit to start tonights game and so he started on the bench. But after just 6 minutes Jose Reyes was substituted after an injury. Enter Henry. Just 20 minutes later and the Frenchman had the desired affect. Picking up the ball on the edge of the are Henry hit a sweetly struck shot with the outside of his foot curling it just inside the far post. Prague keeper Blazek a mere spectator. Arsenal 1 0 Prague.

Tonights other English tie between Manchester United and Lille has been fairly uneventful, Ryan Giggs coming closest with a free kick striking the post on his 100th European appearance for Manchester United. Lille midfielder Acimovic has had chances, his first grazing the bar,van der saar trusting his insticts and allowing the ball to pass harmlessly into the crowd. Man Utd 0 0 Lille

O'Leary Faces FA Charge

When running onto the pitch after the final whistle at the weekend Aston Villa manager David O'Leary had no idea how much trouble he would cause. Many have called his behaviour after the game irresponisble especially as it was against local rivals Birmingham. Today the FA have indeed charged him for his post match actions. But strangely enough not because he ran across the pitch but for using abusive or insulting words to a match official. Apparantly on his way to wave to Doug Ellis he passed referee Graham Poll and let him know that he thought he had a "very poor game indeed" or something to that affect.

The FA did comment on the way in which O'leary launched a one man pitch invasion stating that "he has also been reminded of his responsibilities in relation to his post-match celebrations". What is it coming to when a man can't express a bit of passion at the fact that his club ahve just beaten their neighbours. Sure he shouldn't have said whatever he said to Graham Poll but that's another matter. Give the man a break, after all you would need one if you managed Villa.

London Derby Ends In Draw

It was Collins John who gave Fulham the lead after 28 minutes away at Charlton this evening. His superb volley from the edge of the area giving Fulham a suprise lead after Charlton had the best of the game early on. Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl showed his pace early on as he managed to get in behind a Fulham defence which has looked suspect all season, his shot had Mark Crossley beaten but he was denied by the woodwork. Just prior to Fulhams opener Murphy and Rommedahl combined again but the drive was promptly halted by American Carlos Bocangra.

Charlton almost avoided going in behind at the break but
Hreidarsson arrived into the box just late and saw his shot whistle past the post. Charlton came out to the second half all guns blazing. Just 2 minutes into the second half Danny Murphy rifled in an equalizer. A sweet a strike as you will see all season and a reminder to Mr. Eriksson that Murphy is a possibility for Germany. Fulham had a chance to take all three points late on but Boa Morte's shot resemled the strike of a sunday league player who had been out drinking the night before. Charlton currently occupy a european space whereas Fulham have shown tonight that they may just avoid the drop come may.

Xavier Fails Drugs Test

Picture: Abel with one of his more unorthadox haircuts.

With a hair cut like Abel Xaviers many would think he is on drugs and today Middlesbrough announced - HE IS. After Middlesbroughs Uefa Cup match on September 29th against FC Xanthi Abel xavier was given a random drugs test. Earlier today Middlesbrough announced that the test was indeed positive and that the Portuguese right back has been suspended by football governing body - FIFA.

Last year Rio Ferdinand was banned for 8 months for simply missing a drugs test. So how long do you think Xavier should be banned for? and at 31 is this the end of his career. Personally I believe it depends what type of drug it was i.e recreational or performance enahncing. But you may think differently, one things certain I don't think we will be seeing that wacky hair for a long time.

Irish Looking To Fergie?

Im sure Brian Kerr hasn't been sacked yet but I will just check... no indeed he is still the Irish boss, Although I suspect not for much longer. So why is it we read today Dennis Irwin saying that the Irish Fa has contacted his ex-boss Sir Alex Ferguson with regards to the Irish managers job. I for one find it a little unfair on Brian Kerr that his successor is being discussed before he has left. Adding to the strangeness of the story is the fact that Fergie himself has denied having any contact with the Irish FA. Is Dennis Irwin trying to stir things up I doubt it why would he? so will Fergie be the enxt Irish boss. Well according to him no, he stated ina press conference that he plans to quit football as soon as he retires from his current job at Manchester United. Irwin has played for both Ireland and United and he believes that "He would be a brilliant choice,"

For the moment anyway Ferguson has a job at Man U and Brian Kerr a job at Ireland that is until the Irish Fa put him out of his misery, possibly after their meeting tomorrow. At present Martin O'neil is favourite for the job at 9/4 O'leary is at 3/1 with Roy Keane at 7/1. Incredibly Sven is at 60/1 to become the next manager of Ireland... now there's a thought.

Sport Hurts

Any followers of Soccer Am will know that Sport hurts. Today I fell victim to a point blank shot at my arm which has resulted in its fracture. How happy I am that I will be out of footy for a month and unable to play Pro Evo Soccer that arrives on Friday. I may even consider taking my mate who kicked the ball to injury lawyers for you and hope for compensation on a no win no fee basis, but I think I have more important things to do. Apologies for the short post but i am now officially typing with one finger. Will keep providing news and reviews as and when so check back soon. Rememer, sport hurts so go hard or go home!

A Win Today, But Still a Big Job

After many failed attempts Kevin Phillips finally gave Aston Villa the win they wanted against second city rivals Birmingham. The only goal of the game at St. Andrews came in the 19th minute when ex-sunderland striker Kevin Phillips curled one past Maik Taylor from the edge of the box. It was a much needed win for David O'leary whos side now move up and away from the relegation zone. After the match O'leary gave a triumphant punch in the direction of Doug Ellis. Signalling his support, no doubt for the Villa Chairman who recieved a vote of no confidence earlier this week.

In recent seasons Villa have struggled to realy fulfill there potential as one of the premierships bigegst clubs. For them this season is again shaping up to be one of dissapointment. With only two wins in the first 9 games I feel that Villa will fail to male Europe and probably end up somewhere around mid-table - again. if Aston villa aren't careful they may find themselves being a Premiership "nothing club" Not good enough for Europe, too good to go down. Despite a victory today David O'leary still has a huge job on his hands.

Chelsea Unstoppable?

For a moment this afternoon i thought that maybe their was a chance Chelsea would be defeated and the Premiership would be open to competition again. But no. Despite being 1-0 down at half time to Bolton Jose Mourinhos team came back to win the game scoring an extraordinary 5 goals in the second half. Two from Lampard, two from Drogba and one from Eidur Gudjohnsen. Today Chelsea were rampant and now it is 9 wins from 9 games.

Alex ferguson's Manchester United also managed a win against Sunderland. The devils ran out 3-1 winners against Mick MCcarthys side thanks to goals from the usual suspects Rooney and Ruud, but youngster Guiseppe Rossi also scored on his league debut to seal the win. Stephen Elliot gave the black cats hope towards the end but any hopes of a comeback were swiftly quashed by a United third.

With the other two realistic title contenders ahving won Arsenal needed a win, but it never came. West Brom managed only their second win of the season. A result that leaves Arsenal 14 points of the pace and down in 8th position. Two volleys, one from Kanu and one from Darren carter sealed a bad afternoon for the gunners which ended in the news that Freddie Ljunberg will be out for 3 weeks.

In todays other games Tottenham climbed to 2nd place after defeating a sorry Everton team who are rock bottom of the league having only scored once this season. In the late kick off Portsmouth took a point from Middlesbrough at the Riverside, Yakubu was on target in the 54th minute to deny his former club all three points.

Graeme Souness' job was again under fire as Newcastle were defeated by this seasons suprise package Wigan who scored after 40 minutes therough Jason roberts. The only other result today was Liverpools 1-0 win over Blackburn.

So with Chelsea already 9 points clear of their nearest tivals is the Premiership over already? is this good for English football? Should Sounees go? and what about Moyes? What do you think?

Back To The Premiership

With world cup qualifiers over it is time to get back to Premiership action. Here are my predictions for this weekends premiership ties.

Chelsea 3 vs 0 Bolton
Liverpool 1 vs 1 Blackburn
Middslesbrough 2 vs 1 Portsmouth
Sunderland 0 vs 2 Man Utd
Tottenham 1 vs 2 Everton
West Brom 0 vs 2 Arsenal
Wigan 1 vs 3 Newcastle
Birmingham 1 vs 1 Aston Villa
Man City 2 vs 2 West Ham
Charlton 2 vs 1 Fulham

So there's mine feel free to add some of your own.

Ferguson Keen for Roy to stay

Alex Ferguson has stated that their is every chance veteran midfielder Roy Keane will still be at the club next season. This annoncement comes despite reports from Keane saying he will probably not have his contract renewed. Ferguson has told Roy Keane if he can give him 30 games this season then he will be happy. Keane has already played 4 times this season andso another 26 should see him across the line although I'm sure if he is a few short then Sir Alex will still be keen for him to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Fletcher and O'shea to stay!

United youngsters John O'shea and Darren Fletcher have both signed new contracts to keep them at Man United until 2009. Christiano ronaldo is also said to be close to signing up. Both players have been at Man Utd since they were trainees and both have forced their way ito the first team in recent years. Darren Fletcher occasionay seems to struggle in Premiership games but surely he will improve with experience, O'shea is also overshadowed by wing backs-Gabriel Heinze and Gary Neville, although both Fletcher and O'shea have already made an impact on the international stage. With new contracts signed the pair will only improve with more games under their belt and what better place to gain experience than the theatre of dreams.

England Top Group, Irish Out Of Luck

Frank Lampard scored again for England tonight giving them a 2-1 victory of Poland. The result means that England finish as group leaders going into the 2006 world cup in Germany. Unfortunately for the Irish they were unable to break the deadlock in their game agaisnt Switzerland and so will not be ocmpeting in Germany. Brian Kerr's side finished 4th in the group behind Israel, Switzerland and France. The french have qualified automatically whereas the Swiss will have to go through the play-offs to secure their place at the tournemant in 2006. With his contract at an end Brain Kerr may well wake up tomorrow morning without a job.

Keane To Raise Irish Hopes

Ireland going into their World Cup tie against Switzerland tonight needing a draw for a play off place. The Irish could even top the group if Cyprus beat France although that is very unlikely as France still need to win to confirm their place. Any of these four teams can still qualify in a group currently topped by Israel. Roy Keane and Damien Duff are both injured but manager Brian Kerr announced he hoped Keane would be in the changing room before the game to get the others up for the big occasion. Despit Israel being top of the group I can see France winning and Ireland making the play-offs.

Arsenal Ready To Splash Out

Thierry Henry is set to become Arsenal's biggest ever earner when he is offered a new contract at the end of the season. Gunners chairman Peter Hill Wood announced that the Frenchman "Would become the highest paid player in Arsenal's history - and deservedly so." henry doesn't however want to enter contract negotiantions until the end of the season. Barcelona are rumoured to be intrested in Henry and if his contract his almost up it could mean he leaves for a fraction of what he is worth. But with a rumoured 4 year £100,000 contract on the table who would want to leave. Is Henry worth that? I anyone worth that? Is it time salaries were capped? Give us your view. Leave a comment.

Rooney v Nielsen: This time its International

Wayne Rooney has announced that he doesn't hold a grudge against referee Kim Milton Nielsen despite being set of by him for ironically clapping his decision to book him a few weeks ago. It will be the danish official who referees England's game against Poland on Wednesday an Rooney has told press "I don't think there will be any problems, he's a good referee and does a good job," Yes It is Wayne Rooney just not as we know him. I for one are pleased Rooney is available again because for me unlike most things Peter Crouch just wasn't up to it on Saturday. See what I did their "up to it"? I know terrible isn't it.

Gallas: Should I Stay Or Should I Go

Ok I have had enough of World Cup related news although may I just say how funny it will be watching Togo in Germany. Back to the Premiership for a moment and Chelsea defender William Gallas is said to be considering quitting the club at the end of the season. Gallas who is currently 28 years old will make the decision in six months time at the end of the season. I am sure there will be interest as for me the French International is a very under-rated player with world class qualities. A possible replacement for Gary Neville at Man Utd? Who knows? But with Gallas still having 6 or 7 years left in him someone could get bag themselves a real bargain.

Oh The Great English Weather
