Do you have what it takes?

Since a young age I have enjoyed Championship manager which is now known as Football manager, a few weeks ago the latest installment was released but only recently have I been able to play it due to a hectic schedule. What a game! The most detailed and realistic management game yet by a long shot. My first season in charge of Southampton was a challenge but I got their, promotion from 2nd place was good enough for me. Having Geoff Horsfield and Malcolm Christie was a big help they amounted 40 goals between them. The step up to the premiership was tough despite signing, Solskjaer, Carrick, Dunn and and the legend that is Pierre Van Hooijdonk I still lost my first game 8-0 to Arsenal. Unrealistic I hear you scream but if you saw my defensive performance you would have expected more. The next few games brought little respite and after 5 games i am without a win and have scored just the once. If anyone has the game I'd be interested to see how you're getting on and if you haven't got the game, ask yourself why not? Just be careful not to get addicted. Anyway got to go, an away tie at West Brom awaits.

Ole may have played last game.

Manchester United midfielder Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have played his last game for the club after being injured for two years. The Norweigen who originally injured his cruciate ligaments against PAOK in 2003 has only played once since then and at the age of 32 it is not looking good. Ever since scoring the winning goal in the champions league final on that night in May Ole has been a fans favourite at Old Trafford, his contract does however run out at the end of this season and with a lack of football under his belt it is unlikely to be renewed. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is still hopeful saying that"We're all hoping he can make it back and we keep praying." Although the clubs physios are unable to put a date on Solskjaers return to training United fans will be hoping that the baby faced assasin will turn out in red once more.

Ronaldinho Takes Top Prize

After a weekend when football said goodbye to one of the most skilled and talented players ever to grace the pitches another has been honoured with a top award. It was no real suprise to see Barcelona's Ronaldinho take the 2005 European player of the year award. He was favourite for the coveted accolade having won 2004 Fifa World Player of the Year and the inaugural FIFpro award. The 25 year old became the 3rd Brazilian to win the award whilst blaying at the Nou Camp, Ronaldo and Rivaldo having previously picked up the award whilst at Barca. Ronaldinho was closeley followed by Enlish midfield pairing Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Having seen Ronaldinho set up a goal with his back, jinking and flicking his way through defences I think that this award has gone to the right place.

Palace reject Dowie Approach

Although Neil Warnock is still the favourite to take the vacant Portsmouth job Palace have revealed that they turned down an approach for Iain Dowie from Milan Mandaric's side. Portsmouth have been without a manager since frenchman Alain Perrin was sacked last week and are lying dangerously close to the drop zone. Chairman Mandaric is keen to bring in a British manager who has the fight and determination to keep the club in the Premiership, a bill that Dowie fits perfectly. Palace chairman Smon Jordan has however rejected the approach saying that "I have rejected Portsmouth's request and look forward to maintaining a strong working relationship with Iain." Other candidates for the job include Sir Bobby Robson who has personally expressed his interest. Ruud Guillit has been linked but is said to be unconvinced by Mandaric's approach, George Burley is a front runner and Neil Warnock is also very much in the frame although I believe he will be keen to finish the job he started at Sheffield United.

George Best Dies

We all knew it was coming but was still a shock when the announcement was made. Football legend George Best has died at the age of 59. His footballing talent has never been equaled and it is a sad day to lose one of the best players and icons of the game we love. The BBC has some brilliant tributes and videos of the master in action. Take a look at www.bbc.co.uk/sport .

Goodbye to a great George was simply the best.

Keane: Manager or Player

Since leaving Manchester United roy keane has been linked with over 40 clubs. But is it time for Keane to move into management or stay a player. After todays departure of Alain perrin he has been linked with the vacant managers position but should he take it. Keane has seen a lot in his time and at the age of 34 his playing days may soon be coming to an end. He will certainly know how to win having spent 12 succesful years at Old Trafford. Will the alure of his childhood favourites Celtic be too much to resist and will we seen Keane turning out for the Hoops. Who knows, the ball is firmly in Keanes court. I personally believe that Keane needs the experience of another club other that United before taking up position as boss, he is still a valuable player and it wouldn't suprise me to see him staying on for a few more years. Drop us your opinion by leaving a comment.

Perrin Parts With Pompey

After a short break Football To You is back with news that Porstmouths french boss has been sacked by his club. Alain Perrin is being let go after only 8 months in charge, he takes with him a terrible record of only 4 wins from 20 games in charge. A run of form that has seen Pompey slip dangerously close to the relegation zone. This isn't an unexpected move, many including Neil Warnock have already been linked with the position although the blades boss was quick to rule himself out after the announcement. Coach Joe Jordan will be taking charge for Pompey's clash with Chelsea on Saturday. Chairman Milan Mandaric "This has not been an easy decision. Alain is a talented coach and a good man who has worked extremely hard since arriving," But it would seem that Perrin is not the man to save Pompey from the drop. A tactitian certainly but a relegation battler, still up for debat.

Transport Not A Problem In South Africa

It may seem along way off but their have already been concernes about the state of public transport in South Africa ahead of the world Cup to be held their in 2010. At current South Africa has a very antiquainted system with many relying heavily on old and often dangerous taxi- mini bus's. Plans are in place to mprove the situation, a 1.5 billion pound high speed railway network is under construction although much of South Africa does not believe its completion to be a realistic aim. However Sepp Blatter ( he seems to be featuring a lot today) has dismissed any worries saying that he was confident South Africa well hve the problem sorted by 2010 and wil prove to the world that an African nation can organize and run a competition as big as the World Cup. For now the footballing world is focused on Germany 2006 but let's hope that everything runs smoothly in the build up to 2010.

Tradition Out The Window

Contoversial Fifa persident Sepp Blatterw ho once suggested that women should wear shorter shorts to make the womens game more appealing has today come out with yet another outrageous suggestion. Blatter was dissapointed at the booing of the national anthems during Switzerlands 'clash' with Turkey and now has hinted that they should be scrapped at international games. Although no official steps have been taken to put this into action Blatter did say that he was "Wondering whether it makes sense to play the national anthems. We should at least consider not playing them." I think that it would be a great shame. Singing your national anthem before a big game is a great sign of national pride and always seems to get the fans going, it would be a great shame if all that had to be stopped because one Swiss got annoyed when his anthem was booed. Unfortunately it does go on but lets not overeact to it. Keep those national anthems booming out.

McClaren Pens New Deal

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren has signed a new deal that will keep him at the Riverside until 2009. The ex-Manchester United assistant has performed wonders at Middlesbrough guiding them to Carling Cup victory and Uefa CUp action 2 years on the trot. Recently he has been linked with a number of high profile jobs including replacing Sven as England boss or Fergie at Man Utd. Today's announcement is sure to please Boro' fans who have been keen for their 44 year old boss, who is also England assistant to stay on. The deal is thought to include compensation packages for the northern club should McClaren leave before his term is complete. On completing the deal McClaren told press "The club going is places so it was never even a question of whether or not I wanted to stay."

Bolton - Birmingham Game Cancelled

African Nations Losing Competitive Edge

The African nation scup seems to be going the way of Copa America with several high profiles players deciding not to compete. Samuel Eto'o is the latest player set to miss the competition to focus on his club duties. The Cameroonian international who missed his countries tie against Morroco last week to prepare for Barcelonas big clash against real Madrid. Eto'o has had previous tentions witht eh national side and is said to be dissulusioned with the way the setup is run. He has however yet to reveal whether or not he will travel to Egypt. If he choses not to travel then he may well face disciplinary action from the Cameroon federation.

Good as though the African nations cup is I wonder whether with players optng out the competition will be worth running. High profile absentees threaten to make it non-competitive. The competition does howver provide a good stage for younger players to break through onto the international scene. No doubt the worlds big guns will be keeping a close eye on the happenings in Egypt next January.

Biggest Game In Years

It has been 10 years since Manchester United failed to qualify for the knock-out stages of ther Uefa Champions League but after a recent run of poor form int he competition this a possibility once again for Sir Alex Fergusons team. United ultimately need a win in their tie against Villereal on Tuesday, a fact of which Fergie is very much aware. He said that he couldn't 'think of a bigger game for us in Europe over the past few years,' It will also be Uniteds first game since the loss of their skipper Roy Keane and will be a good berometer of how United will fair for the rest of the season. One point behind Lille, one point behind Villereal, 3 points are a must come Tuesday night.

Charlton want Ban On United

The next time Manchester United face Charlton the away end could well be empty after the events of this weekend. A Manchester United fan was held in custody over the weekend after an alleged sexual assault on a steward. Celebrations for Manchester Uniteds second goal also got out of hand with three fans jumping onto the pitch. A metal fence was also forced down onto a steward who was crushed after United fans clambered to celebrate, the steward lucky not to be more seriously injured. Charlton chief executive Peter Varney thanked the United fans who gave evidence against the male fan who assaulted the steward but later said that "I think, when we see the reports from the police and the local authority, it will leave us with little alternative but to refuse to sell tickets to Manchester United fans for future games at The Valley,". It would be a great shame if the actions of a few morons ruined any chances that real United fans had of getting to see their team at the Valley next season. A full investigation from police and the FA is bound to follow it what is shaping up to be a large disagreement between the two clubs.

Ottmar Hitzfeld Offered 'Position' at United

Former bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund boss has been out of the footballing world for 18 months but it would appear he may be making a comeback and this time in the English game. he has announced today that Mancheste United have offered him a 'position' although at the moment it is not clear whether he will be a replacement for Alex Ferguson or simply work as an assistant. Having won 4 Bundesliga titles at Muich I fund it hard to believe that a manager of Hitzfeld's quality would want to work in the background at United. Hitzfeld's wife is also said to be happy to relocate to Manchester and so any possible move would be a possibility for the German who has won also guided Munich and Dortmund to Champions League success. The 57 year old also announced that despite being 57 years old he had no plans to retire from the beautiful game. Hitzfeld turned down the HEarts job last week but let's up that he coms on board at United so long as it isn't to replace Sir Alex.

The Chase Begins

After his dramatic departure from Old Trafford the race has begun amongst Premiership and SPL clubs to get the signature of Irish midfield ace Roy Keane. Portsmouth, Bolton, Wigan and Celtic are amongst the clubs believed to be lining up a deal. Although some Celtic fans don't believe that Keane would get a place in their starting 11, something that I would heavily question. Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storie has admitted making enquiries into his availability although I can't see Keane turning out at Fratton Park, with all due respect to Pompey I don't believe Keane will want to play Alain Perrins side. Bolton is a possibility after all big Sam has a reputation for signing up the more aging player. Wigan is also on my list of favourites although after failing to sign Scott Parker and Michael Owen in the summer I wonder whether the wages are in place. Whoever does sign him will have gained an invaluable addition to the playing Squad and will have greatly improved their prospects for this season.

Besty Takes Another Turn For The Worst

He has been in and out of hospital in the past few months and today footballing legend George Best was readmitted to intensive care with a new infection thought to be life threatening. 59 year old Best has been steadily improving over the last two weeks and his medical team are said to be disturbed by his latest sudden downfall. A spokesman said that "He was improving every day until yesterday afternoon and he was really pretty good. He is conscious and just about talking," Although Best is struggling he is not on a ventilator which is surely a good sign. His son Callum arrived at hospital to be with him this afternoon. After this latest twist I am beginning to wonder whether we have seen the legend that is George Best in oublic but I sincerley hope not. Good Luck Besty

NB: Someone is currently spamming Indieanthems.com accusing him of hacking my site, this is not the case and I would ask whoever it is to stop as it is causing problems between the two of u. Thankyou.

End Of An Era

Well I have just got in from school to find out that Manchester United legend Roy Keane has left the club by mutual consent. What a surprise, I knew Keano has had his differences with the club in recent weeks after his outburst on MUTV but I never thought it would get this far. Despite training with the United team this morning Keane had left by mid afternoon bringing a shock end to his 12 and a half year career. So where now for the 34 Irish midfielder. A move to Celtic is the most likely, Keane having stated several times in the past that he would like to play for the Old Firm club. On leaving United Keane said that "It has been a great honour and privilege for me to play for Manchester United for over 12 years," Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson described him as a 'great servant to the club. United will no doubt struggle to replace Keanes tenacity, endeavors and passion for the game. If a replacement is not found then United could be heading into harsh times.

Wanchope Lines Up Premiership Return

Although he struggled to score goals I also thought that Paolo Wanchope and something special as a centre forward, a certain flair and eye for goal. Apparantly Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin shares my views as he is rumoured to be lining up the Costa Rican frontman for a return to the Premiership. Wanchope who was previously played in England for Derby County and Man City had a brief spell in La Liga before joining Al-Garrafah in Qatar. He hasn't however been able to settle and so has considered a return to England. Any move for Wanchope is likely to be without a transfer fee and along with a few other signings he could be the right man to keep Pompey in the top flight.

Abramovic Investigating At Stamford Bridge

Only the best will do for Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich. Despite still being 6 points clear at the top of the Premiership and having only been defeated three times all season, it would appear that Abramovich isn't happy. He sent a team to the clubs Surrey training ground who interviewd every single member of the staff and all of the players in an attempt to find out just why Chelsea are having such a dreadful season. I mean top of the premiership by 6 points and qualification to the knock out phase of the Champions League, who would be happy. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was not present at the ground but gave Abramovich a full report as he does each week. Despite his sides recent hiccup Mourinho insisted last night that "We will be champions and I am not afraid of the future,"

Premiership Rights To Be Split

For too long have those without Sky television suffered, no Premiership action on weekends. But that's all about to change under new proposals to spilt the games into six packages. These six packages will then be auctioned off to different broadcasting companies. A deal between the Premier League and European Comission also says that BSkyB canno bid for all 6 packages meaning some games will be turning up on BBC or ITV. Sky currently holds the rights until 2007 when they will then be sold in this format. The aim is to give viewers a greater choice. However premier league chief executive Richard Scudamore said that the move will "damage the game at all levels". So for now its Sky or nothing but come 2007 let's hope that Sunday afternoons without Sky will be more entertaining than at present.

Trinadad and Tobago Have Done It

Never before have Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the World Cup Finals. But today all that changed, an intense play-off in Bahrain saw the Caribbean side come out 1-0 winners giving them a 2-1 aggregate win. So Stern John and Dwight Yorke will be playing in Germany, but it wasn't either of these better known players who got the goal. Wrexhams huge defender Dennis Lawrence scored the goal jumping high and heading home a Dwight Yorke corner on 49 minutes prompting jubilant scenes amongst fans and players. Bahrain had chances to get back into it but Goalkeeper Kelvin Jack made up for a previous error by tipping Talal Yusef's shot just over in the 90th minute. bahrains frustration showed late on as Ali Baba was red carded but it made no difference to the score or the fact that Trinadad and Tobago, with a population of just 1 million, will be the lowest populted country playing at Germany 2006.

Young Player Insight: Freddy Adu

Welcome to a new feature at Football To You. Every week we will be taking an insight into some of the best young players around. This weeks hot property is the young player on everyones lips, Freddy Adu. Born in Ghane on June 2nd 1989 Adu moved to America after his mother won an immigration lottery. Adu was awarded US citzenship in Febuary 2003 and signed a 6 year ontract at DC United. Since then his talents have come to the attention of the big european clubs. Chelsea, Man U, Madrid, Barclona and many more have all tried to sign but ultimately failed becasue Freddy doesn't want to leave the US at such an early stage in his life. But don't be suprised if we see this young prodigy in Europe in the next couple of years. At the age of 16 Adu has a great career ahead of him. If you want to know more here are some links for you to explore.

Historic Day For Aussies: Full report

Australia have qualified for only the second time in their history for the World Cup. Their game against uruguay finished tied after two legs, the South American side went into todays game witha 1-0 advantage but after 35 minutes Mark Bresciano levelled the tie at 1-1. With no more goals in it and neither side having scored away from home the game went to extra time, still no conclusion and so the game went into its dramatic final stage. Step up Mark Schwarzer. The Australian keeper the hero as he saved not once but twice in the shootout. The pressure was then placed onto the shoulders of John Aloisi who held his breath before rifling home the penalty that sends the Australian nation to Germany 2006. It is the first time that the Kangaroos have progressed since way back in 1974. The squad now has top class players many playing at Premiership level and this may be the year that football in Oceanie is finally recognised as worthy competition for the big guns.

Luque Fit But Won't Play

Albert Luque, remember him, the left winger signed by Newcastle at the start of this season. Having played twice he was stretchered off after tearing a hamstring but after 3 months he is back fit. Newcastle play Chelsea at the weekend will not be risked. The £9.5m signing can play wide left or up front having scored many spectacular goals for his former employers Deportivo and will add extra pace to the alread lethal front pairing of Owen and Shearer. The Spaniard will remain sidelined for this weekends clash but may well feature on the bench. It will be the first return to Premiership action for Chelsea since their defeat at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinhos biggest test will have to be at St. James' park against a Newcastle team with renewed faith.

Venables In Ireland Admission

Former England boss Terry Venables has admitted that if he was to be offered the job as Ireland manager he would find it hard to turn down. Since levaing Leeds by mutual consent in 2003 Venables has been offered many jobs but none of them offered him the entry back to football he desired. Since Kerr was let go by the Irish Fa 4 weeks ago many big names have been linked with the job, including Bobby Robson and MArtin O'neill, but Venables is now emerging has the bookies favourite. El' Tel' has bundles of experience at domestic and international level, Spurs, Barcelona and of course England all appear on his CV. Venables' agent today commented that "To comment would not be fair to any of the parties," (Not terribly helpful). Irelands hunt for manager continues but in my eyes Venables could well be the man to ensure Ireland's European Championship qualification in 2008.

Update: Just to let everyone know this is ben I am running it again. I never sold I was hacked but the hacker has restored everything and handed it back. yay.

Englands World Cup Bid

After a succesful bid to host the Olympic games the British government is now lining up a bid to host the 2018 World Cup. A ministerial spokesman announced to day that preliminary talks have taken place. How exciting the world cup on a doorstep, well at the moment it is a long way off, 13 years in fact. Europe is the likely venue for the tournament thanks to Fifa's rotary system. At this point in time World Cup venues are as follows.
2006- Germany
2010 - South Africa
2014- South America (To Be Decided)
2018- Europe ( Maybe England?)

England's bid for the 2006 World Cup was turned down and the decision given in Germany's favour but a bid this time could go our way. Tony Blair appeared on Football FOcus last weekend and said he would welcome a bid for the competition following the success of the olympic campaign. An added bonus of being awarded the game; we wouldn't have to worry about qualification. Now that's a victory in itself. Good Idea? Bad Idea? Drop us a comment with your opinon. For me go for it let's repeat '66.

Maldini To Retire? Surely Not

The illustrious career of legendary Italian defender Paolo Maldini will come to an end at the conclusion of next season. Maldini who was played all his professional at the San Siro with Ac Milan has also broken the Serie A record for appearances with a staggering 571 turn outs. Amounting 126 caps for Italy Maldini is a legend of football, his physical strength and leadership has helped Ac Milan to success in Europe and on the domestic scene. He alos revealed that he turned downa move to Real Madrid 3 years ago due to his love of the Milan club. Maldinis contract ends at the end of the 06/07 season and it is then that we must say goodbye to one of the greatest central defenders ever to grace the beautiful game.

Desailly Considering Premiership Return

Former French International Marcel Desailly who won both the World Cup and European Championships with his country is considering coming back to the Premiership at the age of 37. The central defender who moved to Qatar in 2004 quit Qatar Fc earlier this week becasue his family could not settle. But at the age of 37 who would want him? Well apparantly Alain Perrin may be lining up a move for the player to help his team in their battler against a very serious threat of relegation. When Desailly played at Chelsea in his last season he didn't look good, pace was gone and touch fast going. Although I haven't seen desailly for two years I have heavy doubts about whether he is the man to sure up the Fratton Park defence.

Dudek Considers Future

First off I would like to apologies for the idiots who found it funny to post a load of rubbish and obscenities today, they have been removed and will not be coming up again. This does however mean that when you make a comment it will not appear until it has been approved. This shouldn't be a problem and will only mean a 10 minute delay. Secondly Jerzey Dudek is considering his future at Anfield after losing his 1st team place to summer signing Jose Reina. After a heroic performance in the Champions League final last season you would have thought the Polish international did enough to secure a first team place but since the £6m signing of Reina he has failed to get a look in. One of the main issues for Dudek is the up and coming World Cup, he stated that "It is difficult ahead of the World Cup if you are not playing and especially in my position," I can't see Dudek missing out on the World Cup as there aren't any more renound Polish keepers but a move away from Anfield in January is looking likely at the moment.

Kraft Interested In Liverpool

First Manchester united were overtaken by an American billionaire and now it appears as though Liverpool may be going sown the same track. After a meeting with current chief executive Rick Parry american billionaire Robert Kraft failed to rule out rumours that he is about to invest in the Anfield club. It is thought that the Kraft family is set to finance Liverpools move to a new stadium. Robert Kraft who currently owns NFl side New England Patriots stated earlier that "Liverpool is a great brand and it's something our family respects a lot," Unlike the Glazers in Manchester it does not appear to be a complete take over at the moment. Although who knows what the furture will bring. The New England Patriots are a successful NFL side having won several superbowls. If Kraft can bring the same success to Anfield then his moved will be welcomed by Liverpool fans young and old.

Where Now For England

England 3-2 Argentina. What a climax to a great game of football and not only that but a superb England performance. Beckhams delivery was brilliant, Rooney world class and Owen in typical goalscoring form. So after having beaten the team ranked 2nd in the world where does this leave England in terms of the World Cup. At the moment the bookies have us as 3rd favorites behind Brazil who are the obvious favorites and the team we beat last night. So Brazil are the favorites and to me it's obvious why. A strike force with the big names of Ronaldo, Robinho, Ardriano and Ronaldinho. Sure England have 2 world class strikers in Owen and Rooney but the cover is yet to be put in place. There is however still a year to go, perhaps Bent or Defoe will develop but we will have to way for that. The English midfield is strong as long as we can get set a formation set in place and perform well with it. What we played against Argentina was good but I couldn't help but think that Gerrard was slightly wasted. Defence is not a problem so long as a wing backs are fit, as Bridge looked suspect at Left Back. For me Sven is the man for the job and come kick off in Germany I hope he is still in charge to guide us to the final, but realistically I still don't think it will be England's year.

Mcleish Considered Quitting

Rangers boss Alex Mcleish considered walking out on Rangers over speculation that his term at Ibrox is coming to the end. After a poor run of form in recent games rumours have been floating around that he is about to be replaced, with Rangers currently 12 points off the pace in the SPL and after having been knocked out of the CIS Insurance cup it would come as no suprise to me to see them bring in someone different. A few names have been linked; George Burley, Paul Le Guen, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Alan Curbishley all possibilitie although Curbishley seems a very unlikely one. The Gers boss told press earlier that "This is a tough place to manage and, at times, I've thought 'Do I need the hassle?". If things do not improve at Ibrox soon then Mcleish may be picking up his P45 sometme soon.

Riquelme Stirring Things Up Before Big Game

Argentinean midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme has been trying to stir up the England players after suggesting that Wayne Rooney lacks intelligence. Rooney was sent off for sarcastically clapping referee Kim Milton Nielsen whilst playing Riquelme's side Villereal earlier this year. Argentina face England later today and Riquelme believes that his team will run out winners against Svens men. He is also a believer that you need more than drive and determination to win a football match, temperament also plays a big part. In the past Rooney has exploded on the pitch, making reckless challenges and doing stupid things. If Rooney does it today then sure he could cost England the win, but if he plays like we know he can showing pace, skill and limited agression then he may be the player to tip the balance in England's favour.

Pires Was On Way Out

Robert Pires has revealed that if it wasn't for Arsene Wenger he would be a Juventus player. His captain patrick Vieira moved to the Turin club in the summer and he was going to follow but Arsenals French boss convinced him to stay. He has revealed that he had contract talks but Wenger wouldn't let him leave as he still has a year to run. However Arsenal may still have problems hanging onto their French winger, if his contract is not renewed soon then he might seek a move to Italy or Spain. He has admitted that if Arsenal were not to meet his contract negotiations then he wouldn't be staying in England. But there is still every chance for Arsenal and maybe it is time that Pires did move on, his performances haven't been brilliant and perhaps Arsene needs to bring in some fresh blood to improve the Gunners league standing.

In With A Chance

A packed house at White Hart Lane last night saw England salvage a 1-1 draw in the U21 World Cup play-0ffs agaisnt France. England found themselves 1-0 down going into the final few minutes but a late goal from charltons Darren Ambrose ensured that England go to Nancy for the return leg with a chance of qualification. France took the lead after 47 minutes, Sunderland's on loan striker Anthony Le Tallec converting at the near post to give the French a vital early goal. Late on England surged forward desperatep for an equaliser and just 2 minutes from time they got what they ultimately deserved. Peter Whittingham's shot scuffed to Ambrose at the back post who slid in to get the goal England needed.

England had oppourtunities to level the game before the 88th minute but Darren Bent had a header cleared off the line and shot a volley over. Boss Peter Taylor said after the game he was "Pleased because I know we can do 10 times better," Let's hope they do in France and get the win over France.

County Rivalry

Tonights League one game between West Country rivals Swindon Town and Bristol City takes on extra significance at the County Ground as both sides have made a disasterous start to the season. Both theese sides started the season with high hopes and yet both have parted with Managers after just 16 games played.
United vCity, Celtic v Rangers, it may not be, but as any fan knows a Derby is a Derby wherever you are and that trip to work the next day can be something to relish or dread depending on the result. My money is on a local stalemate possibly goaless, but lets hope for the netural(and Sky Sports), it's more like 3-3.

England vs Argentina: Predictions and Debate

So England have a friendly against Argentina on Saturday but i feel it will be anything but that. Alf ramsay described Argentina as animals in '66, Maradonna's hand of god goal that never was and in recent years Beckham giving Simeone a good kicking. This is what makes the rivalry so great. Possible formations for Sven to try have been flying around everywhere but here is the one I think he should play.
GK- Robinson
LB- Bridge
CB- Ferdinand
CB- Terry
RB - Young
Holding Role - King
CM - Gerrard
CM -Beckham
CM- Lampard
FC - Rooney
FC - Owen

Fell free to submit your selection. Prediction for the game is 1-0 to the mighty England, ok so I am going with my heart not my head but I'm hardly going to predict and Argentine win. If Svens men can get it together on Saturday then they have a chance against a strong side ranked 2nd in the world. A performance similar to that against the Danes or Northern Ireland will result in a heavy defeat, a defet we will never be able to live down.

Wembley May Not Be Ready

The new Wembley stadium was suppossed to be hosting this seasons FA Cup final but Michael Cunnah who is in charge of the developmetn admits the game may have to be held at the Millenium Stadium as it has been in recent years. The Millenium Stadium is brilliant, I was there last year and the atmosphere was superb, but I still hope that the national stadium will be ready. The computer generated images look fantastic and with a capacity 90,000 the atmosphere should be even better than in Cardiff. According to Wembley chief Cunnah the only problem with finishing in time would be if their is a particularly bad winter, as many have predicted, this would mean that foundations cou;d not be dug and the all important pitch could not be laid. Brian barwick the Fa chief executive has already expressed his doubt about the stadium meeting the deadline. I have full faith in the project, we all know how reliable builders are!

Fernando Gago Linked With Chelsea

Argentine midfield starlet Fernando Gago has been linked with a move to Chelsea away from his curent club Boca Juniors. If the move goes ahead then it will be the first capture of Frank Arnesen's reign as youth development manager. The dane who controversially moved to Stamford Bridge from Tottenham last year was apparantly tipped off about the midfielder. Arnsen first spotted Gago at the World Youth Championships in Holland where he helped his side lift the tournament trophy. Any move for the player is thought to cost Chelsea £5m. He might not move straight to Chelsea a stop off at PSV is likely in order to help the player improve his game. The link between PSV and Chelsea has been strong ever since Chelsea signed Robben and Kezman from the dutch giants. Chelsea also financed Eindhoven's signing of Alex last year. Barcelona and Real Madrid have also declared their interest in the yongster.

Lay Off Crouch

After a baron run this season of 16 goals for club and country without a goal peter Crouch has come in for a lot of criticism from not only England fans but also from the Kop at Anfield. Today has however seen Anfield legend Michael Owen asking fans not to torment the 6' 7'' when he represents England against Argentina on Saturday. Owen believes that 'He's a very good player,' but also says that Crouch isn't the sort of player who will be spurred on by criticism. It seems that Crouch is the sort of player who doesn't thrive in criticism like some but finds it hard to cope with. I can only see booing him as he comes on as detrimental to his self confidence. At the moment Peter is goal shy, ok he should have scored more regularly since his £7m move but that will come. Crouch is a decent enough player for the Premiership but in my eyes will never be able to cope wearing the three lions on his shirt.

Update: Just looked on NewsNow to see if my post came up and 5 minuted before me Skysports launched the same stroy with the same headline. I assure you my material is original.

Warnock Not Budging

Under fire Portsmouth manager Alain Perrin is apparently being replaced, rumour is that Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock will take the position but not if Sheffield United vice-chairman Terry Robinson has his way. He declared today that "He's under contract, he's not going anywhere." It seems a guarantee that current Pompey boss Perrin will be shown the door in the near future after owner Milan Mandaric told press "Alain is a good coach but now is not the time for a professor, now is the time for a street-fighter"

Speculation is bound to occur around such a great manager, on a limited budget this season, Warnock has guided the Blades to the top of the English Championship. Surely this is the year Sheffield United gain the promotion they deserve. Warncok is also keen to stay on at Bramall Lane saying "I've got a job to do here." A job I believe that he has carried out marvelously. In my eyes Perrin isn't the man for the job and its time that he stepped down to ensure Pompey's Premiership title.

Disgraceful!

So it's Tuesday, and at Football To You that means it is time for some international news. For the second time in 2 years Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o has suffered racist abuse at the hands of Getafe supporters. The incident occured on Sunday and was reported by the referee in his match report, he stated that "At various points throughout the game when Barcelona's Eto'o contested the ball, some sectors of the crowd imitated the sound of a monkey," referee Arturo Dauden Ibanez wrote in his official match report. Racism seems to be a real problem in Spain, I remember Shaun Wright Phillips being taunted in an international match last year. The problem may be the severity of the fines, when a similar event happened last year Getafe were fined a whopping £400. How ridiculous is thast, it acts as no deterrent, it is the fans that need punishing, there must be a way.

Despite numerous attempts from club officials, such as stopping the game and making announcements on the tannoy and isplaying messages ont eh electronic scoreboards, the chanting did not stop. Racism has no place in football, it must be stamped out. The kick racism out of Football campaign is a leader in ridding the beautiful game of its ugly abuse. It can be found at http://www.kickitout.org/.

Bolton Lucky To Take Points

Leading at half time it looked as though Bolton would go on to take all 3 points and they did but only just. A poor decision by the linesman denied Jermain Defoe an equaliser. Nolan's thunderous strike means that Sam Allardyce's men are now above Man Utd in 3rd place. It could of however been so different. Mido struck from inside the 6 yard box on 80 minutes but he saw his effort cannon back off the crossbar. After going behind Tottenham were filled with the desire to equalise but it never came about. Yong-Pyo Lee got through on goal but his shot drifted harmlessly wide after a scuff.

An attempted cross by Stalteri turned into a shot and Jaaskelainen was relieved to see the ball come back oer his head after Spurs again hit the woodwork. A masterful performance from midfielder Kevin Nolan. Since becoming captain he has become Boltons most valuable player, scoruing goals, making challenges, why was he not selected in the England team. In my opinion he is better than Jenas and Owen Hargreaves but too under rated, Sven was watching tonight maybe this performance will cahnge his mind. Both clubs still on track for Europe. Bolton in the Champions League? Could It Be?

Half Time Scores: Bolton Spurs

Spurs haven't beaten Bolton at The Reebok for 5 years and it isn't looking good for the sixth attempt, at half time a Kevin Nolan goal separates the two sides. And what a goal, Kevin Nolan drilled the ball past Paul Robinson after 31 minutes, he is currently in a rich vein of form. Allardyce will be pleased with his teams first half performance. They have had 6 attempts on the Spurs goal compared to just 2 in the opposite direction. Bolton have led this game from start to finish, they are passing well but need to take their chances in the second to confirm the three points. Martin Jol spoke of his respect for the northern side earlier today perhaps his side need to show a little less respect if they want to take something from this contest.

I Don't Want To Go

Thomas Gravesen has been linked with a move back to his former club everton. The dane who moved to Real Madrid mid-way through last season for £2.5 m still has 3 years to run on his contract. His agent John Sivebaek has told reporters that Gravesen is yet to hear anything from Madrid about these rumours. Another of his former clubs, Hamburg, is also said to be monitoring the situation. His agent stated that "The problem is that Thomas is not playing at the moment, but Real have lots of games and I'm sure he will." A player like Thomas Gravesen needs to be playing first team football. He can anchor the midfield as well as Makelele and scores goals to. Just look at how Everton are struggling without him. Real Madrid play Gravesen or face losing one of the best midfielders in World Football. Incidently Gravesen is keen to stay at the Bernabau.

NB: Half Time Reports for match between Bolton and Spurs will be up at half time.

Woodgate Suffers New Injury

Since Jonathan Woodgates move to Real Madrid he has been dogged by injury, but in recent weeks he has overcome then and started to hold down a first team place. That was unti last night when Madrid faced Real Zaragoza. He limped off the pitch and is now set to miss another 4 weeks of football. Woodgates impresses performances had also caught the eye of Sven Goran Erikkson and a call-up to the England squad for the game against Argentina was looking like a real possiblilty, but after the hamstring tear suffered last night it is an impossibility.

Woodgate is said to be demoralised but not too unhappy because it is not a reaccourance of the injury that kept him out for 18 months. Luck has not been with Woodgate since his £13.8m from Newcastle to Spain, after a year and a half on the sidelines he finally made his debut. Not an ideal debut , he scored an own goal and was sent off. Lets hope that after this injury Jonathan will come back and start defending like we all know he can. Sad to see a world class player unable to play, not good for England either.

Premiership: Game On

Today has seen the fall of Chelsea, a first half Darren Fletcher goal crushed Jose Mourinhos men despite a strong second half. United are still 10 points off the pace but with a game in hand against Wigan the gap can be closed to 7. All the criticism they have recieved this week was thrown out the window as the teams took to the pitch. United went at Chelsea in the first half and it paid off on 31 minutes, Darren Fletcher, who of late has been useless, headed in a looping Cristiano Ronaldo cross. Keano said mid-week that Smith couldn't play in the midfield, today he proved the Irishman wrong a battling display, tackles flying in, Smith broke up Chelsea's play so they couldn't get going, a man of the match performance. Despite a very defensive performance from United in the second half they clung onto the victory. A victory that strikes a firm blow into Chelsea, something for the Premiership to cling onto, and surely a sign that the Premiership title still hangs in the balance.
Pictured: Essien failed to make an impact

In today's other game Evertons Comeback continued. A James Beattie header in the first half enough to give Everton the three points and lift them out of the relegation zone. Middelsbrough failed to capitalise on their possesion and Yakubu missed a great chance. After 3 straight wins for Boro, a result that left Steve Mcclaren very dissapointed with his side.

Awaiting Premeirship Decider

As I sit on my sofa watching a very valliant Chase Town performance, I can't help but think that the Premiership clash at 4 o'clock will ultimately decide the Premiership title. A win for Chelsea and I don't believe they can be caught. Let's face it the nearest club to them is Wigan and although tey have played well and fought bravely they have no chance of taking the title. A win for United and it may well be back open. The point difference will still be huge but psycologicaly Chelsea will have been hit hard. This may sound bias as I am a United fan but I think that after the meeting mid-week between the players, Keane and Fergie which included the showing of that video tape United will by phyched up and ready to go. The only worry is the massive injury problems United have and the fact that our recent form has been nothing short of abysmal. Still I reckon a United win is on the cards and I sincerley hope that I am right for the sake of the Premiership. Prediction United 2 - 1 Chelsea.

Lucky Liverpool Come Out On Top

Today saw both Premiership and Fa Cup action, for all the news on the FA Cup visit our other blog at www.nonleaguetoyou.com, But back to the Premiership and Liverpool managed to scrape a win away at Villa in todays early kick-off. An 85th minute penalty was converted by skipper Steven Gerrard who satyed calm under pressure after Liam Ridgewell got his legs tangled with Crouchs and the penalty was given. A sweetly struck Alonso drive sealed the points late on. yet another defeat for O'leary's men, the vill manager not happy with the awarded penalty calling it a "bad decision".

In other Premiership action, Arsenal scored 3 at Highbury to see of Sunderland, although the result was in doubt late on when veteran centre half Alan Stubbs pulled the defecit back to just one before Henry sealed 3 points with a calmly taken goal past 18 year old Sunderland keeper Alnwick who replaced Kelvin Davis afet his nightmare performance last week. West Ham continued their good start to their Premiership season. A 10 minute delay in kick off not affecting the home side, 39 year old teddy Sheringham scoring in the second half after West Ham had run the Baggies ragged in the first. West brom did however come back well, Horsefield came on and made a good impression. West Brom could have taken a point but Senegalise International Diomansy Camara wasted a good chance.

Charlton's 100% away record is gone, Mark Hughes Blackburn thumping the Addicks 4-1 at Ewood Park. Blacburn were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes, an exquisite Brett Emerton finish was built upod by Paul Dickov after 18 minutes. Hughes pulled one back for the away side but Pedersen and a Bellamy late on ended any hope of a Charlton comeback. Azik Emre believes that Newcastle will climb the table after some good results and he may be right. It was the Turk who scored the only goal at St James' Park to move the Magpies into 12th. Stuart Pearces Man City didn't look wothy of their league position at Craven Cottage, they went down 2-1 to Fulham and two goals from Steed Malbranque, who had been linked with a move to Liverpool this week. Bradley Wright Phillips had a goal ruled out for offside although the replay showed it to be very close. Wigan and Portsmouth is todays late kick off and after 22 minutes it is 0-0.

Fergie : Chelsea Steal Our Ideas

Alex Ferguson has today claimed that he will have to compete with Chelsea for any player he wants to sign because they steal his ideas. Ferguson told reporters that with Abramovich in charge Chelsea will buy anyone. He says that if they are trying to sign someone "we have to be really quick and decisive now before Chelsea find out about it." I can see the truth in this, last season United were on the verge of signing Arjen Robben but a few days later he was pulling on Chelsea jersey. AmazinglyFergie has also claimed that Chelsea will sign a player just to keep him away from Man u or Arsenal.

With recent results going against Man Utd tomorrows game against Chelsea is huge, if United don't get something out of it then questions will be raised about Fergie's future. If the scot is still at the helm come January then he will have to act quickly to buy new players, the midfield needs strengthening as does the defence. Strange how Chelsea didn't interfere when United signed the likes of Saha, Smith, Kleberson, Djemba Djemba and Park perhaps Mourinho knew something Fergie didn't!

Viduka Gives Middlesbrough Uefa Cup Win

Middlesbrough continued their superb run of form tonight beating Dnipro 3-0 in the Uefa Cup. Two goals from Voduka and a first half Yakubu effort was enough to give Boro the 3 points. After a resounding 4-1 win over Man Utd at the weekend you would think that the Middlesbrough fans would be scrambling for tickets, but no only 12,953 came out to cheer their side on. Perhaps they sense something, the first 30 minutes of the game were dire, no shots, no activity the game was dead until the 37th minute when yakubu latched onto the end of a clever Medieta pass and suprised the Dnipro keeper by shooting first time, it worked and sent 'Boro into the dressing room 1-0 to the good. Vidukas first half was dissapointing, his second half sublime. 15 minutes into the restart he had scored twice to seal a great result for Middlesbrough. Two wins from two in group D for Steve McClarens men.

Bolton also faired well in European competition tonight, they also tp their group after two games. A first half kevin Nolan goal was enough to see off Russian side St. Petersburg. A nervous Bolton defence almost lead to the home sides downfall but luckily St. Petersburg were unable to capitalise on many of their chances. Jaaskelainen saved a point-blank effort with his shoulder late on to save the result for Bolton. 5 goals for Kevin Nolan this season, not a bad return for a midfield player.

Step Down Fergie

They may be able to censor Roy Keane's criticism's of
